Last day at Idle Hand
Since April the crew at Idle Hand Tattoo have been so incredibly hospitable, have made me a part of their family and have let me extend what started out as a brief guest spot to half a year.
But the time has come for me to move on, so this past Monday was my last day tattooing at Idle Hand. I have thoroughly enjoyed working with every single person there and I am so very grateful for being given this start in San Francisco. It's not goodbye, it's see you later...
I have big plans for the future and some big projects and jobs brewing, and as soon as things are official they will be posted here! Stay tuned...

Sunday
Wilderness is not a luxury but a necessity of the human spirit, and as vital to our lives as water and good bread. A civilization which destroys what little remains of the wild, the spare, the original, is cutting itself off from its origins and betraying the principle of civilization itself.

Birds, Bears & Battle Axes
I wish I got to do tattoos like this every day! A new take on the California state flag.
Andrew keeps coming in for more fun stuff! Little filler monocle skull and web.
Riley's been wanting a rooster tattoo for years, I had a ton of fun drawing this and can't wait to finish it!
For her first tattoo ever, Brittany got something a bit different from my usual work. She wanted a piece inspired by 1940's Golden Books children's illustrations, and this is what we came up with.
Jackie sat like a champ and got this chest piece dedicated to her two sisters. (Click on image for full view)
First session on the ever lovely Miss Mardi who came all the way from Melbourne, Australia! This tattoo is inspired by Mardi's amazing Devon Rex cat Nina. Doesn't she remind you of Kiki's cat Jiji in Hayao Miyazaki's Kiki's Delivery Service?
I met Mardi last year when she came out to get this Art Deco inspired tattoo. It's always a pleasure to see her, unfortunately we didn't have nearly enough time for fun hang out! Next time maybe I'll be seeing her Down Under...?
Finally, last sunday I did this little guy four different times on a group of San Francisco boys. Good times and buddy tattoos!

Lost In Greenpoint
After a busy weekend with One Trip Pass, painting room 408 at the Ace Hotel in Manhattan, I crossed the bridge to Greenpoint, Brooklyn, for some long overdue girl-time with two of my oldest dearest friends in the U.S., Janis and Sue.
An adventure walk along the East River with Sue just as the thunder rolled in over the city. As a Bay Area transplant I never get thunder anymore, and I do miss the epic late summer thunderstorms in the North East. The smell of the heavy rain on the hot streets is unmistakable.
Sue works at East River Tattoo in Greenpoint. Before meeting up at the shop I had some time to explore the area, a great little neighborhood with cute boutiques, antique stores, restaurants and coffee shops, tucked away just north of Williamsburg.
(More after the jump:)
The lovely Sue and the East River
East River Tattoo, just as the rain started
Seeing how the three of us have been friends for over 10 years, since I was fresh off the boat from Sweden, we decided to commemorate the occasion with some late night spur of the moment matching tattoos.
Janis had never done a tattoo before...
...but for a first timer she did pretty damn good!
There's nothing quite like 3 am tattoos.
I will hopefully be back in Greenpoint by early to mid October, and will be doing a guest stint at East River Tattoo. If you're interested in making an appointment, email me at kaptenhanna@gmail.com for more info.

More roadtripping: Avenue of Giants
So, to follow up on the last post, here's yet another exploration of the Northern California coast. Yet again with One Trip Pass, and also our good friends Mister Mort and Lou.
This time it's our journey to Takilma, OR, up Rt. 101 on the Avenue of Giants. It took place earlier this spring and is one of my favorite trips to date. Truly magical millennium Redwoods, napping on the banks of the Russian River, sleep overs in treeforts, driftwood and wild packs of chihuahuas. Northern California is treating me well...
Mine is the third photo installment of this trip, so visit One Trip Pass and Mister Mort to see their captures of the journey.

Curly's Motel was built from a single Redwood tree in the 50's. This is a photo of the original tree.
